“It’s good to be noticed and appreciated. The occupancy rate of the renovated gym is maximum. Students, other members of the community, and people with disabilities can play sports here. We are happy to have renovated the facilities, which are very necessary for the city,” says Prof. Dr. Asta Šarkauskienė, Head of the Department of Sports at the Faculty of Health Sciences of KU.
The opening ceremony of the renovated KU FSSH gym took place on June 6. The gym is unique in that people with disabilities can independently and safely access the gym and exercise there. The sports facilities are suitable for practically all sports games: basketball, football, volleyball, table tennis, and badminton.
The outdoor entrance is accessible for people with disabilities – with a lift, widened door space, and automatic door opener. All this ensures easy access to the sports facilities. The gym floor has been replaced. The floor has been cushioned with a layer of shock padding to ensure that people with disabilities and other gym members can move safely on the floor. Toilets and showers have also been adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, with separate facilities for women and men. They are equipped with emergency call buttons to allow users to quickly summon assistance in case of an emergency.
People with disabilities, young athletes, members of the Department of Culture and Sports, academic youth, and community members play sports here. The gym also hosts sports and fitness events.
The gym renovation project was financed by Klaipeda University and the Sports Support Fund. The financial resources to ensure continuity will be provided by Klaipėda University for a minimum period of 3 years after completion of the project.
