Klaipėda University to expand knowledge in geothermal energy: latest technologies, application, funding

In mid-September, in Paris, a representative of Klaipėda University (KU) – Ignas Mikalauskas, PhD in Economics, took part in the event “Geothermal District Heating & Cooling Days”. The event was organized by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) together with project partner SAPHEA. Klaipėda University is an official member of EGEC.

Participants visited the SAPHEA workshop, where innovative solutions for integrating geothermal energy into European cities and industries were showcased. Speakers had the opportunity to discuss the current status of the SAPHEA project as well as case studies, explore new funding opportunities, and share knowledge on the latest geothermal technologies.

A conference was also held to discuss strategies to accelerate the geothermal deployment and to integrate geothermal energy at national and European levels. Participants also delved into European energy market trends and current conditions, enjoyed engaging poster sessions followed by substantive discussions on financing instruments for geothermal projects.

“Klaipėda University’s membership of EGEC and participation in joint events is a strategic contribution to finding the prospects for geothermal energy and eventually transitioning away from fossil fuels. Beneficial exchanges take place between KU and other EGEC representatives in both scientific and technological environments”, says Dr. Ignas Mikalauskas, who attended the event.

Prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas, the Rector of KU, says that Klaipėda University’s membership of EGEC is of great importance, as joint efforts can help to achieve the goals of the energy sector more efficiently.

“Klaipėda University has many excellent scientists, who can contribute their knowledge to the development of a more effective strategy for the use of renewable energy sources in the region. Klaipėda University aims to be a leader in the region of western Lithuania and not just a passive observer of these changes,” says Prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas, KU Rector.

On the last day of the event, participants also visited two innovative geothermal power plants in the Paris metropolitan area: Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt and Vélizy-Villacoublay in Véligeo, which will provide renewable geothermal energy to their customers as early as 2025 replacing the previously used fossil fuel – natural gas.

EGEC is a not-for-profit organization with the aim to raise awareness and develop geothermal applications across Europe through policy making, improving investment conditions, and guiding research. EGEC has more than 200 members from 30 countries ranging from developers to equipment manufacturers, energy suppliers, national associations, consultants, research centers, geological surveys, government agencies, departments, and authorities.

It is worth mentioning that KU, Klaipėda City Municipality, and Klaipėdos energija, AB have already signed a tripartite cooperation agreement. It was agreed to use the territory of the former Geoterma geothermal power plant for the creation of a new infrastructure for research and experimental development in the fields of health promotion, recreation, industry, and heat generation. The aim is also to set up an energy innovation center with the main objective of project development, experimental development, as well as scientific and applied research on the use of geothermal energy resources in the fields of industry, heat generation, health promotion, and recreation.
