The distribution of biofouling aquatic organisms relative to their habitat is very important for ecology and provides initial insight into local features, regulatory populations and assemblages. The aim of this study is to determine the abundance, diversity and distribution of biological vegetation on an artificial and natural substrate in five lakes of Varėna district. The object of the study is the species of macrozoobenthos located in freshwater lakes. To implement the objective of the work was to prepare two different types of substrate (natural from wood and artificial from concrete pads) were prepared and placed on the bottom of lakes for four months, and to investigate which species overgrow the substrates, samples were crushed at selected locations for laboratory testing. The study evaluated the structure of each substrate macrozoobenthos structure, species richness and abundance, used the Bray-Curtis similarity index for comparison in different lakes, performed a seven-factor significance level analysis (ANOVA) and the dependence of dominant species on environmental factors was analyzed using the principal component method (PCA). 23 macrozoobenthos taxa were identified at the sites of the studied lakes, the structure of which differed between artificial and natural substrates in terms of both time and lake. In terms of overall prevalence rates, the most common macrozoobenthos species found in both substrates were Dreissena polymorpha, Theodoxus sp., Psephenus sp., Bithynia tentaculata, Cyrnus flavidus, Caenis ungulata, and Limnephilus intricatus, and only 3 taxa are found in 3 cultivars. The total number of macrozoobenthos taxa and the Shannon diversity and uniformity index (H> 2, HE = 0.78) were the highest in the Mekšrinis artificial substrate and the lowest in lake Mergežeris (3, respectively H <1, HE = 0.63) natural substrate. Using statistical analysis, it was found that the highest abundance of macrozoobenthos was in the artificial (1505 ind.m-2) and lower in the natural substrate (1008 ind.m-2). Most biofouling were found in the substrates of lake Glūkas, in both artificial (14.5 ± 7.8 ind.m-2) and natural substrate (8.4 ± 5.2 ind.m-2), which was determined by the high abundance of Dreissena polymorpha individuals, and the lowest values were found in the substrates of lake Mergežeris (0.5 ± 0.9 ind.m-2). Using statistical analysis of the data, it was found that the abundance of macrozoobenthos was statistically significantly correlated in Glėbas (r = 0.633, p = 0.001) Lavysas (r = 0.464, p = 0.025) and Mekšrinis (r = 0.502, p = 0.014) lakes between artificial and natural substrates. According to the mean abundance of individuals, there is a statistically significant difference between B. tentaculata (p = 0.038), L. intricatus (p = 0.016) and Ischnura sp. (p = 0.033) species between substrates. For the substrate types analyzed, time affected species richness and abundance and the total reproductive time of macrozoobenthos species was determined, ranging from the start of the experiment (first sampling week, early June) to 8 sampling weeks (end of July). Assessing the influence of environmental factors on the distribution and abundance of macrozoobenthos species in lakes of Varėna district, it was found that not only the specificity of the substrate, but also the surrounding environmental factors such as large lake area, depth and forest cover affect the total number of macrozoobenthos taxa and abundance. The results of the study showed that the action of artificial substrate structures can be related to the overall impact of biological overgrowth processes, including different abiotic factors.
