ETD Problems identification in creating sustainable organizations in Ghana[Problemų identifikavimas kuriant tvarias organizacijas Ganoje]master thesisAmofa-Appiah, Dennis2024-01-09Organizations have been implementing strategies in their business to enhance the continuity of their operations. The emerging issues relating to environmental and social problems has made organizations to implement sustainability strategies in their business activities. The scientific problem of the master thesis are factors relating to environmental, economic and social aspect of sustainable organizations. The research question of the master thesis is: What are the challenges business organizations encounter in creating sustainable organizations? The purpose of the study is to identify the problems in building sustainable organizations and make recommendations that will improve sustainable organizations. The study consists of three main parts. The first part is the theoretical part which analyzes the concepts of sustainable organizations in different perspectives, management performance in organizations and challenges relating to sustainability implementations. The second part of the study involves research methodology. Two methods were used, that is, quantitative and qualitative method. Quantitative method was used to conduct a survey on one organization with four branches. Qualitative method was used to analyzed documents and websites of some selected sustainable organizations. In addition a qualitative semi-structured managerial interview was conducted on three managers using qualitative method. The third part of the research focused on the empirical analysis and evaluation. The findings revealed that Organization’s inability to reward and motivate employees work done or activities, lack of local funding associated with environmental friendly materials, and lack of economic development sustainability policies are the organizational, environmental, economic and social challenges and barriers that impede the establishment of sustainable organization in Ghana. The findings of managerial interview also revealed problems relating to lack of accessible sustainable technology, lack of capital access, cost of investment, and supply chain challenge. The qualitative analysis of selected organization was done on 7 out of 29 organizations from the UN Global Compact. All the 7 organizations were practicing sustainability and have sustainability implementation strategies in their operations. The remaining organizations couldn’t be analyzed because they were not having active website and their sustainability practice couldn’t be identified. The research thesis proposed recommendations for effective building of sustainable organization.
